Planning

Emergency response can be complex, fast-moving, and sometimes unpredictable — and that’s where our Planning Section plays a vital role.

While our operational crews are preparing to head out the door, the Planning team is already working behind the scenes. They gather and analyse intelligence, weather forecasts, incident reports, and operational information to ensure our unit responds safely, efficiently, and with the right resources in place.

Planning is about preparation, coordination, and keeping everyone informed. It’s a calm and focused role that directly supports the safety of our volunteers and the effectiveness of our response.

What does the Planning Section do?

The Planning team supports all of our emergency management activities by:

  • Evaluating weather systems, intelligence, and situation reports

  • Monitoring and recording operational information during incidents

  • Supporting decision-making before and during responses

  • Maintaining accurate incident documentation

  • Applying the Australasian Inter-Service Incident Management System (AIIMS) during larger or more complex incidents

  • Supporting the Incident Controller with coordination and situational awareness

Our core responsibility is to support the Incident Controller in leading and coordinating responses. During activations, Planning members work closely with DFES State Communications (ComCen) and DFES State Operations Officers, who manage and dispatch emergency requests 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Planning ensures our crews are sent to the right place, with the right information, at the right time.

Why join the Planning Section?

Planning is ideal for people who enjoy organisation, critical thinking, communication, and working in a structured environment. If you’re comfortable using computers, can stay calm under pressure, and like analysing information to help guide decisions, this could be the perfect role for you.

No prior emergency management experience is required — all training is provided by DFES. You’ll learn nationally recognised incident management systems and gain valuable skills in coordination, leadership support, and operational planning.

Most importantly, you’ll become part of a supportive team that plays a key role in every successful response.

If you want to contribute in a meaningful way, help keep our volunteers safe, and be at the centre of emergency coordination, the Planning Section could be the role for you.
