Communications

Want to be right at the centre of emergency operations? The Communications Section is the vital link that keeps our teams connected, informed, and coordinated when it matters most.

Behind every successful response is clear, reliable communication. Our Communications team ensures information flows smoothly between crews in the field, our Incident Management Team, and partner agencies. When situations are fast-moving and conditions are challenging, Comms helps keep everything running safely and efficiently.

It’s a focused, high-responsibility role — and an incredibly rewarding one.

What does the Communications Section do?

As a member of the Communications team, you will:

  • Operate and manage emergency radio networks

  • Monitor and relay information between field crews and Incident Control

  • Support the command centre during activations

  • Maintain clear and accurate communication logs

  • Assist with coordinating resources and operational updates

  • Help ensure the safety of crews through effective information sharing

In addition to operational communications, the team is also responsible for maintaining the unit’s electronic systems and technology. This includes managing and supporting computers, tablets, radios, and other communication equipment used during training and emergency responses. Communications members help ensure our devices are operational, updated, and ready to deploy at a moment’s notice.

You’ll work closely with Planning, Operations, and Logistics to ensure everyone has the information and technology they need to respond safely and effectively.

During larger incidents, Communications becomes the backbone of the operation — maintaining contact with multiple teams, supporting situational awareness, and ensuring no message is missed.

Why join the Communications Section?

Communications is ideal for people who can stay calm, think clearly, and communicate confidently — even when things get busy. If you enjoy technology, teamwork, and playing a key coordination role, this could be the perfect fit.

No previous experience is required. We provide all the training you need to become a skilled radio operator, including specialised instruction in emergency communications systems and procedures.

You’ll develop valuable technical and interpersonal skills, gain confidence operating in high-pressure environments, and become part of a dedicated, supportive team.

If you want to be at the heart of emergency response — helping connect crews, coordinate operations, and keep our technology and communications running smoothly — the Communications Section is ready to welcome you.
